Blair Underwood pushes for NBC series screening in Petersburg

Blair Underwood star of NBC series "The Event"Actor and former Petersburg resident Blair Underwood is pushing for Petersburg as a possible location to premiere his new NBC series "The Event," a political thriller in which he plays the President of the United States.

"All it takes is for people to vote for their city," Underwood told The Progress-Index. "I think it would be great for Petersburg to host the premiere because it would pick up right at the Oscar Night in March," he said.

If successful, it will not be the first time the city has had a taste of Hollywood. In March, the Central Virginia Film Institute hosted an official Oscar America Night at the Union Train Station that featured Underwood as host.

After several consecutive years of modest but consistent growth, broadband adoption slowed dramatically in 2010. Two-thirds of American adults (66%) currently use a high-speed internet connection at home, a figure that is not statistically different from what The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project found at a similar point in 2009, when 63% of Americans were broadband adopters.

New "Buying Power of Black America" Report Shows Major Shift Spending In Response To Economy

Black consumers are responding to tighter economic condition by focusing more of their spending on items and services that improve their homes and lifestyle. That's one of the trends revealed in the 15th annual report, The Buying Power of Black America, published by Target Market News.

The report analyzes spending for black households in 2008 and finds that African-Americans began showing signs of the pending economic turmoil that would hit the entire nation. The pattern of purchases shifted dramatically in some categories. Contributions to churches and other non-profits dropped 16% to $11 billion.
